These guys have their space set up. A table scrounged from a dumpster, plaster buckets to sit on. This appears to be a daily ritual for them, a bit of formality at their meal time. It was a warm day and they enjoyed their lunch in comfort and the shade.

26 July 2011// 5th Avenue and 23rd Street 5:59pm CMQ-0032

A New York City Landmark, said to be the first “skyscraper”. It was made possible by Mr Otis’ invention of the safety brake for elevators. Even with the 18mm lens it is hard to find a spot to get it all in without also including to many other things. I waited for the light to be in my favor and stood in the street. I love the light at this time of day. The sky doesn’t overexpose and there is shadow detail.

26 July 2011// Lower Broadway 8:44am CMQ_9964
1/500 f/3.5 18mm lens ISO 1600
I saw this man having a smoke with his morning coffee on Lower Broadway. There seem to be fewer and fewer smokers these days and the ones that are left are being pushed to the margins. I am glad that I don’t smoke anymore, but even after ten years I still find myself thinking every now and then about how nice a cigarette would be….

This morning I spotted these two window washers enjoying a moment before starting work. They were not paying attention to the view here, I wonder what the view is like 40 stories up on a window washing scaffold.

22 July 20011// Times Square 10:18pm CMQ_9703
I went up to Times Square last night, after the sun had set…it was still hot. It was very crowded and as always, there was a police presence…I saw this officer watching the crowd with the neon behind him….thanks officer!

22 July 2011//West 14th Street 8:20am CMQ_9646
I passed this man getting ready to go down in a manhole…The temperature was already very hot and getting hotter…104 degrees today in Central Park. I wonder how much hotter it was under the street? Con Ed must have done a good job because we did not lose power on this hottest day ever….

22 July 2011//Bowling Green 7:20am CMQ_9632
There are over 12,000 pictures of this bull on Flickr…but it is still a cool shot. Usually when I am here there are so many people posing or snapping it is hard to get a good shot. This morning it was already over 90 degrees and was heading for 104…a new record. I guess the heat kept everybody away. By the way, The Bull is in Bowling Green, not Wall Street……

22 July 2011// Staten Island Ferry 7:00am CMQ_9598
On the return to Manhattan. It was already over 90 degrees on the way to 104…a new record. The breeze made it bearable during the ride. All of the regular riders were busy with their papers, their phones, oblivious to the incredible view…
